About Nioh

Nioh is a challenging action RPG from Team Ninja, set in 1600s Japan during the Sengoku period, where a fictional William Adams (based on the real navigator) hunts demons and battles warlords. The combat is the game's heart: it combines the punishing difficulty of Dark Souls with a deep stance system, ki pulsing, and weapon skills drawn from Team Ninja's action pedigree. Each of the five stances changes your moveset, and mastering the rhythm of attack, ki pulse, and stance switching is the key to victory. The loot system adds Diablo-style gear progression, so grinding for better equipment is a real part of the game. The level design is mission-based rather than open world, and the yokai (Japanese demons) enemies and bosses are memorable. Its sequel, Nioh 2, refines everything further, but the original remains a demanding, rewarding classic.

What is ki pulsing?

Pressing the ki pulse button after an attack recovers stamina and clears yokai pools, a core combat mechanic.

No — it uses mission-based level design rather than a connected open world.

Do I need to know Japanese history?

No — the game is a fictionalized tale set in a real historical period, and it teaches you as it goes.
