About Blasphemous (video game)
Blasphemous is a 2019 action-platformer set in Cvstodia, a nightmarish land inspired by Spanish religious art and imagery. You play the Penitent One, a silent warrior on a pilgrimage through a world of grotesque, penitent monsters and twisted cathedrals, in a story full of religious allegory and suffering. The game is a Metroidvania: you explore a vast interconnected map, unlocking new abilities that open previously unreachable areas, and battle punishing bosses drawn from the game's macabre aesthetic. The combat is deliberate and weighty, with a mea culpa system that powers special prayers and executions. The art direction is its standout feature — the pixel art and gothic horror style are unlike anything else in the genre. It received a sequel, Blasphemous 2, that refines the formula with more weapons and exploration. For fans of challenging Metroidvanias with unique style, it is a must-play.
